AT&T Windows Phone Updates: My NoDo update experience

How to update

As reported by various sources, the AT&T Windows Phone NoDo update started to be pushed to the Samsung Focus and LG Quantum on 4/19. See this page for a list of what is offered in the update.

I, and a few others, found out that even though the phone hadn’t told us the update was available, connecting it to the Zune software on your PC made the update notification appear. This appears to be the case because of the schedule the phone itself uses to check for updates. Connecting it to your PC and the Zune software checks immediately at launch.

  • How do I update my Windows Phone with NoDo?
      • To update your phone follow the official instructions on updates here.

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsphone/en-us/howto/wp7/basics/how-do-i-update-my-phone-software.aspx

  • I don’t’ care about the added features OR I don’t want to install software on my pc, should I skip the update?
    • My personal opinion is: No, you should not skip the update. In addition to the features listed on the link above both the device manufacturer and carrier have included updates that add features and enhanced performance. The update process is simple. That being said, your device will continue to function just as it always has if you choose not to update. Although, you will be missing out on a better experience without the update.
  • I tried installing the updates but I get an error? What do I do?
    • Match the error code you get to the instructions on this page. Follow those trouble shooting instructions for your specific error.

My Experience with the update

A friend and I walked through the update on our Samsung Focus phones simultaneously. Besides the applications we have installed and customizations available via the operating systems both of our phones software are as they were the day they were purchased from AT&T

  • My friends phone: Samsung Focus – stock 8 GB on board memory, few apps, no music
    • February update – update successful
    • March update – update successful (quick backup and install)
  • My phone: Samsung Focus – 32 GB Micro SD expansion + stock 8 GB on board memory, many apps, 15+ GB music
    • February update – update NOT successful (error 800705B4)
      • Followed troubleshooting instructions, including installation of Windows Phone Support Tool
      • Use Windows Phone Support Tool – tool successful
    • February update (post Windows Phone Support Tool) – update successful
    • March update – update successful (lengthy backup, quick install)

I suspect my use of the SD expansion card is what caused the few issues I had and lengthy backup. Beyond the initial error the update went off without a hitch. Even the error troubleshooting instructions and Windows Phone Support Tool were easy to use.

Post Update Performance

I will spend a few days with the updated software and post further updates on my experiences with the OS itself and special ATT/ Samsung updates.

NODO Updates for ATT Finally Here + Extra Software

Well it has finally happened. NODO has moved out of the “testing” phase for the Samsung Focus and LG Quantum and into the “scheduling” phase. Scheduling means the update should be delivered in approximately 10 business days or less. You’ll notice the HTC surround, another AT&T Windows Phone, has not yet changed status. Apparently that device requires further testing on a “third party package” included with the update.

What are third party packages? Well they can be a variety of things including firmware and extra software and for the first time that I’m aware of we have insight to what those are for the AT&T devices. Eric Hautala updated his blog post and mentioned that the NODO update, “includes support for two special AT&T features. The first is “WISPr” protocol support, which makes it possible for your phone’s data connection to automatically switch over to AT&T Wi-Fi hotspots when in range. The update also includes support for AT&T Address Book.”

I had posted previously that I conjectured there had to be extra software included in the updates that explained the additional time required for the AT&T devices. Turns out that was true. I have never heard of or used the AT&T Address Book, but it appears to be a free AT&T hosted contact backup and synchronization feature with integration with other AT&T offered services. For someone who uses Hotmail/Windows Live as their primary email this seems unnecessary as Windows Phone easily synchronizes contacts through Hotmail/Windows Live. I know that is not the case with some other email services. For those individuals it may be worth looking into. On the other hand the WISPr protocol support sounds pretty cool. I do know there are many AT&T Wireless hotspots near me but I never think to connect to them. Assuming this happens automatically it could make for a much faster and smoother data connection when out and about. I will post details when I get the update on my Focus and have a chance to try this out for myself.

Channel 9 talks Windows Phone Future w/ Joe Belfiore

http://channel9.msdn.com/Blogs/Windows-Phone-7/Windows-Phone-7-Announcements–Demos-from-MIX-11-with-Joe-Belfiore/player?w=512&h=288

There is a lot of good news in this video preview of what is coming up in future versions of Windows Phone from the 2011 MIX conference. This good news includes many improvements I voiced my opinion about in the initial release. I’m starting to get that awesome feeling I did when I first saw Windows Phone; “it’s just smart.” Hopefully Microsoft can execute these future updates better than the current ones so that awesome feeling doesn’t turn sour. But let’s stay positive; One think that did immediately stand out to me was Joe’s use of the phrase, “in Windows Phone 7”, when contrasting the current software build to the preview. It really makes me feel like we’re going to be in a new version when this stuff roles out; Perhaps Windows Phone 7.5 or 8. Regardless, if you have invested in the platform already or are considering to, watch this video, it’s worth it.

April 13, still no definite NODO date for ATT customers

I have to believe there is something going on behind the scenes with the ATT devices, Samsung Focus, LG Quantum, and HTC Surround. Eric Hautala has updated the Windows Phone Blog this morning stating, “We’re eager to share progress. But these tests are important, and they’re just not quite done. I expect to have more to say soon—so please stay tuned. “

At this point in the game, if they were truly expected to be done in the next few days originally (the 15th marks the second half of the month in my book) they would have a new estimated complete date they could share. I really think there is something going on with firmware testing on these devices that makes them unique compared to the others. Maybe there is a fix for the SD Card issues on the Focus. Perhaps ATT is increasing 3G network speed with a new firmware. It’s all conjecture, but there has to be something special about these devices. Whether it’s good special or bad special I can’t say. Regardless, Microsoft should be giving some insight to the hold up. It would be the right thing to do. But if this isn’t resolved in the next few days, then I expect to see a Where is my Mango update chart added to the “Where is my update page” with the status of “testing” right now. At this rate they’ll have to start in April if they plan to get Mango out before end of 2011.

I still love the platform, I still encourage others to get it, but it’s like having the realization that one of your childhood heroes isn’t the class act you once thought he was. Very disappointing.

On a happier note, Microsoft has added a new Update Central with resources on the update process. It’s a welcome addition to their communication, but not the detail I and many others desire.

Still Waiting for NODO? Be Patient.

So it is 7 days into April and many still have not had the NODO “February” update pushed to their WP7 devices. It’s been a long wait, and many of the more technical savvy have turned to some really incredible homebrew solutions to bypass the wait and get the update early. Microsoft’s Eric Hautala says if you do this, “your phone might get misconfigured and not receive future updates.” I’m being patient, there is a lot going on in my life at the moment that has taken priority over the blog, but I’m still eager and still waiting and when it is finally pushed to me by ATT I hope to hear news that some of the rumored special “fixes” for the Samsung devices will be coupled with it. I’ll describe that in detail when it happens.

What a difference a day makes, Microsoft communicates (sort of), and a call to action

I really do believe Microsoft is trying to communicate better. Over the past year I’ve been very impressed by the amazing support via Twitter for many of their products including Zune, XBox, and Office. Their podcasts (Windows Phone Radio & Zune Insider), although surprisingly “non-corporate”, not only give a glimpse of what it’s like inside the “big M” but also share nuggets of information you just don’t get elsewhere. These are examples of communication from a large company that i’ve really never seen before, and to give Microsoft credit, it truly is communication; back and forth. I personally have conversed via every one of these channels with those at Microsoft. It’s refreshing and they deserve kudos for it.

Conversely the blogs, in particular the Windows Phone Blog, is definitely not as refreshing as the methods listed above. It’s still too corporate, and I’m sure that intentional, but because of that fact the communication is stale and lacking. As I posted previously, the NoDo update was to begin rolling out to handsets yesterday. As more information trickled out it became obvious there was going to be a wait for many to receive the update. The interwebs exploded with “when will I get my update?” questions and ” I haven’t seen NoDo” yet statements. People, including myself, wanted to know where their update was.

So today, in response to the questions, Microsoft posted an update to their Windows Phone Blog providing some information on what to expect. Not surprisingly waiting is part of the answer. But I don’t want to dwell on that. They also provided a chart showing in what stage the update is in depending on the device. Again, expect to wait. It’s a good first step Microsoft, but you can do better. Be proactive!

So I turn my attention to the carriers, who most suspect to be the true culprits here. What can we, as consumers do about their involvement? Not a whole lot, but not nothing. I propose a CALL TO ACTION. I strongly consider you tweet one or both of the following to your carrier daily and follow through on the action. Maybe we can make a difference, at least it’s better than just complaining and waiting.

  • Until NoDo is offered by your carrier, cut back on unnecessary expenditures that benefit them. The first thing that pops in my head are text messages. Eliminate them, you have a data plan, send an email instead!

“@windowsphone @att I wont send or respond to text messages until #nodo is delivered to my device #NODOUGHTILLNODO #WP7 http://bit.ly/fYzp1K

  • Take the high road, since most of the devices are currently in the testing phase, maybe the carriers truly don’t have the resources to test this massive update (sarcasm), lets offer to help them out and expedite the process.

“@windowsphone @att I offer to assist in the testing of #NODO in order to expedite its release #WILLWORKFORNODO #WP7 http://bit.ly/fYzp1K

For those who believe this is a fruitless effort or all hope is lost for Windows Phone, let me remind you of some very deep words…

“You can’t give up hope just because it’s hopeless. You have to hope even harder, cover your ears, and go ‘blah blah blah blah blah!” – Fry, Futurama

Windows Phone 7 “NoDo” update starts rolling out

The first major update to the Windows Phone 7 is reportedly being rolled out to carrier startings on 3/22/2011. Yet it appears, according to Mary Jo Foley at CNET, that some phones may not see the update for weeks. http://zd.net/g2EKCY

Overall, this coupled with the announcement of new phones across the different carriers is good news, but for those, like myself, who are actively watching and waiting it is again a disappointment.

Complaining will do us little good, so lets prepare. For those of you waiting for the update it will be good to familiarize yourself with the changes included in this update and also the update process itself. It is important to note that you cannot initiate the update yourself, you have to wait till your carrier makes it available to your phone. You will be notified on the phone, and also in the Zune software/ Mac Connector if you check for updates there. I will document in detail the update process when I get the notification and post that on mwgeek.

Everyone wants to be like Microsoft

This week the various tech news sources have had no shortage of news about the upcoming Google Games, Google Maps 45 degree maps, Google Music, and Apple allowing wireless media syncing. Here’s the perfect opportunity to remind you who first brought you all these features. It was often overlooked Microsoft. Bing Games have been available for a few weeks now. Bing Maps has had “birds eye view” for quite a while. Bing Entertainment (including Music, movies, TV and more) using the Zune back end has also been around for a few weeks now. The Zune media players have offered wireless syncing since their inception (yes, you do not have to plug in a device to sync it) and the ill fated Kin phone offered over the air syncing (as will Windows Phone 7). Not going to try to be a fan boy at the moment, but strongly encourage you to try the Microsoft offerings. It just might encourage a switch (in many peoples’ opinions they are the better offering). This is also a good time to mention that Bing’s usage continues to steadily rise.

Microsoft’s IPad Killer, Full 3D Games on WinPhone7 and R&D dollar comparison

Long before the IPad was announced there was a leaked video of something called the Microsoft Courier. A "e journal" bi fold tablet that had some amazing capability. Well, MS finally confirmed the product is real and have shared some new videos. The interface is nothing short of amazing in my opinion, another homerun right on the heels of the amazing WinPhone7 interface. Speaking of WinPhone7 there is now footage of games running on the new platform. One even shows how the same game can be started on the PC, continued on the phone, and finished on the XBOX. Right now games will only support turn by turn multiplayer and can’t yet sync your progress across the 3. Finally, a recent graph shows a comparison of dollars spent on R&D between Sony, Microsoft and Apple. One company spends SIGNIFCANTLY more than the other 2, and it may not be the one you think. Think of this when you think which is the most innovative company of the three.
